History and Workings of The U.S. Supreme Court
What is The Supreme Court?
- The Supreme Court is the only branch of the federal judiciary that the Constitution expressly mandates, and the highest court in the nation. It holds judicial priority over all other courts in the nation and is made up of nine justices. There is something called a Supreme Court brief which is the written statements used by the lawyers to present their case's arguments to the judge.
Why is it Important?
- The Supreme Court can be important in a variety of ways. One way it is important is because it is crucial to make sure that each arm of government recognizes the limitations of its own authority because of its judicial review jurisdiction. The court is made up of three main purposes and that includes, to determine how a law should be applied, to interpret the meaning of a law, or to determine whether a law is suitable for a particular set of facts.
What did you learn about the Supreme Court That You Didn't Already Know?
- Something I had learned about the Supreme Court by watching the videos and hearing about it in class and online is that I uncovered that the United States Supreme Court was founded by the U.S. Constitution and has jurisdiction over all federal laws and regulations. I also learned how much of the Court's examination of the constitutionality of laws and rights implies an enormous amount of responsibility. The public's belief in the Court's credibility and impartiality is what gives it legitimacy, even if the Court's legitimacy has its foundation in the Constitution.
What is The Most Important Key Take-Away Point About the Supreme Court?
- In my opinion, one important key take-away point that I had learned about in the Supreme Court was when it had talked about how the judges' requirement was to wait until the case reaches them as opposed to immediately stating that It is an issue, we need to solve.
What Is the Most Surprising Thing You Have learned?
- The most surprising thing I have learned throughout watching the video and based off of what we had discussed in class was that it can take up to months with over eighty pages/essays before it decides how much time is spent on each case before the Court provides its decision on what they should do. I thought this was surprising because I knew that it is something that would take awhile but I was unaware how long it and about the writing part.
How Did The Video Change The Way You Looked Thought of The Supreme Court?
- The video changed the aspect in which I looked at the Supreme Court because it taught me a bunch of new things that I didn't know before or things that I had known but not much detail about. I also had pictured it a lot less stricter than it really is. I knew there was a lot of rules but not exactly what they were and what could happen when not following them. I learned a lot mainly from being in class but along with the videos he had attached and even by just doing this blog post.
